Johannesburg - A man has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and killing an 11-year-old girl in Mmakau village, North West police said on Monday.

Sergeant Philani Nkwalase said the man gained entry to the child's home through a window and snatched her as she was sleeping with her younger sibling early on Saturday.

Mmakau is about 14km east of Brits.

The child's mother was sleeping with her boyfriend in the other room. The couple woke up when they heard a noise. However, the child was already gone. The matter was reported to the police.

Her body was found later that day in a neighbour's shack, hidden under a bed. She had been strangled. The Daily Sun named her as Ofentse Mogale.

The 41-year-old man was arrested. He would appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate's Court soon on charges of kidnapping and murder. Police were investigating whether the child was raped.
