Cape Town – Police in the Free State on Thursday appealed to the public to help them find the family of an unidentified elderly man who died soon after being found on a farm in the province on Monday.

The South African Police Services (SAPS) said in a statement that a farmer had found the elderly man near his home on Sonneskyn farm near Hoogte grain silos at about 19:45 on the evening of December 26.

When the farmer and the African male, estimated age of 75 years, were unable to communicate, a farmworker was summoned to help. It seemed the man could only say the words taxi and hungry. The farmer gave the old man some food but he was not able to eat it. An ambulance was called and the man was taken to Tokollo Heilbron Hospital.

SAPS added that the emergency medical services had responded quickly and tried to treat the man but he died on arrival at the hospital. The police are asking for help identifying the family of the man, who was not carrying any identification.

He had a dark complexion and grey hair, and was wearing a striped brown and white top with a hood, a checked brown jacket, striped white and blue T shirt, brown trousers, checked black and red socks and black shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Heilbron SAPS Detective Warrant Officer Molefi Mothola on 058 8535 233 or cell phone number 073 4949 220.
