Johannesburg - When ER24 paramedics arrived at a collision scene on Wednesday night, they didn’t expect to find two men with bullet wounds and another with head injuries metres away from the vehicle.

The bakkie had crashed into a pole on Peter Road, in Ruimsig, Roodepoort.

This occurred as paramedics worked to save the lives of the three men. It was still unclear what exactly happened.

“One patient with a head injury was found several metres from the vehicle ina critical condition,” said ER24 spokeswoman Chitra Harduth.

“Another patient who was found near the vehicle was found to have sustained a gunshot wound. He was also in a critical condition. The third patient had also sustained a gunshot wound.”

Police spokesman Captain Johannes Maja said the three victims were allegedly armed robbers who were escaping a shootout.

Around 7pm on Wednesday, a group of seven men had tried to rob a liquor store in Roodekrans, but upon arrival found that the security guards did not appreciate the men entering the premises.

Maja said the men opened fire on the security personnel, who shot back, wounding at least two of the seven men and forcing them to flee.

Piling into the bakkie, the group clearly made a poor decision by allowing one of the wounded robbers to drive, as, after travelling about 5km to Ruimsig, the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a traffic light.

Maja added that the other four gangsters left their fellow robbers on the scene. After paramedics arrived and stabilised the remaining three, they were arrested and taken to a nearby hospital.

“We are still looking for the outstanding suspects,” he said.
