Durban - One of five awaiting-trial prisoners who escaped from the Hibberdene Magistrate's Court was rearrested on Friday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
Captain Thulane Zwane said community members assaulted 23-year-old Siyabonga Mkhize before handing him over to the police.
He was taken to hospital and would be charged with escaping from lawful custody.
He and four other awaiting trial prisoners escaped from the court on Thursday. They were appearing on charges of house-breaking and theft.
Police were still searching for the other four men. - Sapa
