Cape Town - A 37-year-old man will appear in Strand Magistrate’s court on Monday after abalone worth R780 000 were found in his car following a pursuit by the police on the N2 in Strand.

The chase ensued when the man disobeyed a police instruction to pull over, accelerating instead, police spokesman Tembinkosi Kinana said.

“Lwandle police members were conducting routine patrols at about 1.30am on Friday, when they noticed a vehicle driving at high speed on the N2 in the direction of Cape Town.

Giving chase, they managed to pull over the driver.

“During the search, the police discovered the vehicle was loaded with about 4 120 units of abalone, estimated at a street value of R780 000,” he said.

In a separate incident R1 million worth of abalone was seized after the driver of a bakkie stopped and ran away when chased by the police on Saturday.

“As the police tried to stop him, the driver abandoned the vehicle and escaped on foot,” Kinana said on Sunday.

He added that people were urged to report suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods.

This could be done by contacting the nearest police station or by calling Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
