Johannesburg - One of seven men who hijacked a security vehicle died after the car veered off the road and hit a pole in La Rochelle, Joburg, on Wednesday

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the seven men allegedly held the ADT Security reaction officer at gunpoint and forced him out of the vehicle.

“The incident happened at around 2:15am near the Turffontein Racecourse in southern Joburg.

A guard who was patrolling in La Rochelle was allegedly confronted by a group of seven suspects who pointed a firearm at him.

He was then robbed of his firearm and a bulletproof vest, tied up and left on the side of the road before the suspects drove away in his patrol vehicle,” Dlamini said.

“After they stole the ADT armed reaction vehicle, it is believed that they lost control of the car and crashed it into a street pole.”

Dlamini said the officer was unharmed.
