Hijacker dies in shoot-out

Durban - A hijacker is under police guard in hospital after a shoot-out with police left his accomplice dead in Newlands East on Sunday night.

Police spokeswoman, Captain Nqobile Gwala, said police traced a hijacked white bakkie from KwaDabeka to the Newlands East area.

Police spotted the bakkie in Inanda Road and gave chase. Gwala said the hijackers opened fire on police.

One of the hijackers was killed in the shoot-out.

A case of carjacking and attempted murder has been opened at Newlands East police station.

The arrested suspect will appear in court soon.
