Hitch-hikers killed a man and raped a woman who gave them a lift near Zeerust, North West police said on Friday.
Two men and a woman were driving to Johannesburg to buy a car, when they stopped their Toyota Prado to pick up two hitch-hikers on Thursday morning, Brigadier Thulane Ngubane said.
On the N12 near Stilfontein the hikers produced a firearm and a hammer. The one with the gun pointed it at the driver, while the one with the hammer assaulted the two passengers.
She was instructed to drive back, via Delareyville. On the way the hitch-hikers threw out the two passengers. One of them died due to his injuries. The hitch-hikers stopped at Delareyville, dragged the woman into a maize field and raped her. They left her naked.
The men fled in the woman's car with R140,000 in cash and two cellphones. A passing police patrol found the woman and took her to the Delareyville police station, where she spotted her car parked nearby.
She was taken to a local hospital. Her surviving passenger was admitted to another hospital with serious head injuries. Police are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder, car-jacking and rape. - Sapa
