Johannesburg – A 32-year-old Modimolle home affairs official was arrested for corruption, the Limpopo Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) said.
Spokesperson Captain Matimba Maluleke said that the official allegedly confiscated the passport of a foreign national during the joint operation between the South African Police Service, South African Revenue Services and home affairs in Modimolle in January.
"The suspect allegedly demanded R3 000 from the complainant in order to get his passport back. The matter was reported to the Hawks and the entrapment was set and the suspect was arrested immediately after receiving the money he had demanded," Maluleke said.
The official is expected to appear in the Modimolle Magistrate's Court soon.
