Home Affairs officials nabbed for corruption

Musina - The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said on Friday that its anti-corruption unit had arrested two Home Affairs department officials on suspicion of fraud, corruption and extortion.

“The first suspect (36) who is an Assistant Manager at Giyani Home Affairs was arrested after a long and profound investigation which started in 2012,” said Captain Matimba Maluleke of the Hawks in a brief statement.

“The suspect allegedly solicited bribe from Asylum seekers from different countries during his tenure as the manager of Refugee Centre at Beitbridge Home Affairs.”

The second suspect, who is a 42-year-old immigration officer, was arrested for allegedly stamping the passport of an illegal immigrant who was detained in police custody for being in the country illegally.

Both suspects were expected to appear in Musina Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
