Video footage shows police dragging taxi driver Mido Macia behind a police van.

Johannesburg -

The family of Emidio Marcia, the Mozambican taxi driver, who died in police custody will be provided with the necessary documentation for his funeral, the department of home affairs said on Saturday.

“In pursuance of this contribution, the home affairs department is in contact with the Mozambican Embassy in Pretoria and has also visited relatives of Emidio Marcia in Daveyton, Benoni on Friday to discuss the sort of documentation that the family would require to give Emidio a decent funeral,” said spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa.

He said the Mozambican Embassy in Pretoria was in contact with the man's father in Mozambique to finalise funeral arrangements.

The department was ready to issue the documentation necessary to help smooth the process of repatriating Marcia’s body for the funeral in Mozambique, such as a death certificate.

Marcia was tied to the back of a police van and dragged along the street in Daveyton, on the East Rand, on Tuesday.

An eyewitness filmed the assault. Marcia died in the local police station's cells later that day.

The eight policemen implicated in his murder were arrested on Friday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate said.

Other sources have identified the man as Mido Macia. - Sapa
