Umgeni - A police officer was shot dead and a man was wounded in a shoot-out in Umgeni Park North in Durban on Friday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

The 48-year-old officer was responding to a house robbery at Riverside when two men shot him, said Colonel Jay Naicker.

Apparently the men stormed into a house and tied up a domestic worker and a gardener.

The officer responded to the incident and was shot on arrival, said Naicker.

He shot back and wounded one of the men. The second man managed to get away and police were searching for him.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni said the police would not rest until the other man was arrested.

“We are shocked that yet another one of our police members has died at the hands of ruthless criminals.”
