Pietermaritzburg - The Pietermaritzburg man, 29, who allegedly took his family hostage and wounded four people in a jealous rage before shooting himself is fighting for his life in hospital.
The man’s uncle confirmed on Wednesday that his nephew had been transferred to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban. He has had surgery and is in a critical condition.
The man allegedly took his 80-year-old grandmother, his brother, sister and 2-year-old niece hostage early on Monday. He allegedly stabbed his former girlfriend’s new lover and shot a police reservist and two officers before turning the gun on himself. All the victims are in a stable condition in hospital.
The man’s uncle said the family were struggling to cope. “Now we are praying for my nephew’s recovery and all who were hurt.”
The shots that rang out shattered the quiet of rural Imbali Unit 14.
Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, confirmed the man had been arrested after he stabbed his former girlfriend’s new boyfriend in the neck.
He was taken to a clinic, where he disarmed a police reservist and shot him. He fled to his home, where he allegedly held his family hostage. Police tried to gain entry, but two officers were wounded. They were taken to hospital.
