Evaton, Gauteng - A woman who was rescued after being held hostage at gunpoint by her boyfriend in Evaton, Gauteng on Friday, was receiving counselling at a local hospital, said police.

This came shortly after her boyfriend was shot and killed by police after negotiations for her release failed, Captain Dennis Adriao said.

“Our detectives are waiting for the counselling process to be completed before they can get the details as to what led to the hostage incident,” he said.

An unlicensed 9mm firearm that the boyfriend had used to shoot the woman's sister was recovered.

Adriao said preliminary investigations revealed the deceased had an argument with his girlfriend and her sister at a house in Vereeniging.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, apparently drew a firearm during the argument and shot the girlfriend's sister in the foot.

“He then abducted his girlfriend and fled in a vehicle,” said Adriao.

Police acted swiftly after receiving a report of an attempted murder and managed to locate the vehicle next to a house in Evaton.

“The man was still holding his girlfriend hostage when police arrived. He was shot and killed after he failed to co-operate with the negotiators after over three hours,” he said. - Sapa
