Johannesburg - A Springs couple who allegedly assaulted and kept their five children captive in their home briefly appeared in the Springs Magistrate's Court on Friday.

The woman, 36, wearing a white jersey and black pants, and her husband, 36, in a white shirt and black pants, appeared before Regional Court magistrate Roy le Roux.

The case was postponed to August 22 for further investigation.

The couple may not be named to protect the identity of their children.

The woman, who is out on bail, left the courtroom with a family member after the case was postponed. Her husband remains in custody.

Outside the court, local residents displayed posters with the words “Stop child abuse”, “Springs Monster”, “House of horrors” and “No bail for abuse”. - Sapa
