Durban - Five suspects believed to be linked to a housebreaking syndicate were arrested after a high-speed chase and shoot-out with police near Gateway on Thursday morning.

Two of the suspects trying to flee on foot were shot.

Police found crowbars, bolt cutters, gloves and other housebreaking implements in the car.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said police were patrolling near Gateway, in uMhlanga, at about 5.30am when they became suspicious of a Toyota Corolla with Estcourt registration plates. When the occupants saw the police, they sped off.

A chase ensued and the suspects allegedly opened fire on police. Police returned fire.

The vehicle stopped at the Shell garage opposite McDonald’s in uMhlanga Rocks Drive and the suspects fled.

During the chase two suspects were shot. All five were arrested.

They face charges of attempted murder and possession of stolen property.
