Durban - Police shot dead four men in KwaNdengezi after a high-speed chase on Wednesday night.

Police spotted a suspicious black GTI golf, with five occupants, at the intersection of Hans Dettman and Higginson Highway at about 7pm.

A police source said the men on the back seat slumped down to try to avoid being seen.

The driver stopped, but as the police got out of their car, the driver of the Golf sped off, the source said.

A high-speed chase then ensued towards KwaNdengezi, Mariannhill.

The driver of the Golf was driving recklessly.

Along the main road, the Golf smashed into the back of a white Golf.

The impact caused one of the back wheels of the white Golf to come off.

The black Golf came to a halt about 100m from the collision.

When the police stopped behind the black Golf, the men inside it got out and began shooting at the police.

Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said the suspects had initiated the shooting and the police returned fire.

When the Daily News arrived, the crime scene was dotted with police cones where cartridges lay strewn around two of the men lying on the road.

One man was found dead on the back seat of the car, while two others lay nearby.

A fourth suspect died while trying to cross a concrete bridge along Acorn Road 200m away.

A fifth man is believed to have fled the scene.

Police recovered three pistols and a revolver. One of the guns was a police firearm which had been reported stolen in Malvern.

Balaclavas and gloves were found inside the black Golf which had false number plates stuck over the original ones.
