Rustenburg - A total of 703 people have been arrested in the North West over the last week for various crimes, police said on Sunday.

Of the arrests made, 11 were for murder, 18 for rape, 105 for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and 27 for residential burglary, said Colonel Emelda Setlhako.

“The following goods were also seized... five vehicles, three firearms, 11 knives as well various drugs. Most of the suspects have already appeared in various courts while others are expected to appear tomorrow, Monday.”

Meanwhile, in Phokeng near Rustenburg on Thursday, police were tipped off about a white bakkie allegedly transporting stolen copper cables.

The bakkie was seen on the N4 and pulled over, with copper cables worth around R150,000 found in bags under a blanket in the bakkie.

“The driver of the bakkie could not produce the necessary documentation and permit authorising the transportation of copper cable,” said Setlhako.

“The driver was arrested for possession of stolen goods and detained at Rustenburg SAPS. The vehicle was also impounded.”

In Marikana, also on Thursday morning, a bakkie was stopped and searched by community service centre members, and copper cable worth around R200 000 was seized.

“Nine suspects were arrested. The suspects are due to appear in Rustenburg Magistrate's Court on Monday,” said Setlhako.
