Eastern Cape police are still searching for the gunmen who shot dead a police officer while critically wounding another in Port Elizabeth.

Lieutenant-Colonel Sibongile Soci on Tuesday said the 33-year-old female constable and her 36-year-old male colleague, both attached to the New Brighton police station, were on patrol in Veeplaas on Monday when the gunmen attacked them.

The policewoman died on the scene and the policeman was rushed to hospital. He is in a critical condition.

“The deceased police officer is survived by her husband and three children,” Soci said.

The colleagues of the shot police officers are receiving counselling.

“The Eastern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta, earlier visited the families of both the deceased police officer and the injured police officer to give her support.”

No arrests have been made.

Binta condemned the attack and called for anyone with information to contact their nearest police station or CrimeStop on 0860-10111. – Sapa
