Police are trying to track criminals who assaulted a Cape security guard, tied him up and left him for dead in an underground drain.

Police spokesman FC van Wyk said the victim’s colleagues had became worried when he did not return from walking his beat on the premises early on Sunday morning and had started searching the premises without success. They called their supervisor.

“When the supervisor arrived at the site, they searched again and found the victim’s shoe lying near a drain that was covered with a safety catch.

“The supervisor then called out the victim’s name and they got a response from the inside of the drain.”

Derrick Banks of private ambulance service ER24 said a paramedic rescue crew had been sent to Montague Gardens at 2.45am on Sunday.

The crew had used specialised equipment to extract the guard from the drain.

“The man had a suspected head injury and multiple cuts and possible broken bones.

Police said no arrests had been made and an attempted murder case has been opened.
