Husband ‘drove car into his wife’

Police believe a 24-year-old woman, killed when she was hit by a car allegedly driven by her estranged husband, was murdered.

Police are now seeking Zimbabwean Alexio Mukanda, 26, in connection with the death of his wife, Rejoice Giyane, who was killed on Wednesday in Rust-en-Vrede Street in Ridgeworth, Bellville.

Police believe Mukanda may have fled the Western Cape and could be on his way to Zimbabwe.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer November Filander said Mukanda, who lives in Khayelitsha, followed her in a friend’s car to her workplace in Bellville and waited until she left.

 

“When Giyane finished work she walked in the direction of the bus stop. Mukanda wanted her to get into the vehicle, but she refused. She then proceeded to walk towards the bus stop.”

He said Mukanda drove at her, knocking her over, and then drove the car into a tree before fleeing on foot.

A severely injured Giyane was rushed to hospital where she later died.

Filander said: “We suspect that Mukanda may have fled the Western Cape, and might be on his way to Zimbabwe. We have alerted border patrol to be on the lookout for him.”

* Knysna police are searching for a man who broke into the home of a 90-year-old woman in Kwikkie Street, Sedgefield on Tuesday at 9am.

Police spokeswoman Captain Bernadine Steyn said the woman was alone at home when a man came in through the front door. The woman was tied to a a chair with a pillowcase. The burglar took a watch and some cash and then left.

The woman was not hurt.

*In a separate case Knysna police arrested two 20-year-old men at their homes in Concordia, Knysna, in connection with a burglary at the home of an 81-year-old woman in Kokkewiet Street, Sedgefield on Wednesday.

Steyn said the woman had noticed a man standing outside her house, but did not see another man coming into the house. He grabbed her from behind and tied her hands with an electrical cord. The second man then entered, and they both hit her with a hammer.

 

The men fled after allegedly stealing a cellphone, camera, jewellery and cash.

The woman was taken to hospital, treated and discharged.

The men will appear in the Knysna Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
