Durban - A Sherwood electrician who was attacked in an apparent road rage incident has told of his ordeal.

Veer Harrysingh, 22, said he was assaulted last Thursday, by an unknown man driving a bakkie in Cypress Drive, Durban North, because he did not give the driver a gap to enter the traffic flow.

Harrysingh said he had been driving with his girlfriend and her friend at the time.

He said that moments before the incident he had given a taxi a gap and was driving forward to close the space when a bakkie forced its way in, almost hitting his bumper.

“The driver of the bakkie tried to side-swipe me. Once he got in front he slammed on the brakes and jumped off.

“He pulled me out of the car and called two men seated at the back of the bakkie. They began punching and kicking me.

“The driver had my hand in a lock behind my back. He also attempted to suffocate me by pressing down on my neck,” he said.

In a daze, Harrysingh got back into his car. His friend, Revania Govender, who witnessed the assault, said the traffic was a nightmare.

“The driver repeatedly screamed I am gonna f*** you up.

“After he beat Veer up the man came back and took pictures of us with his phone. It was a traumatic experience,” she said.

Harrysingh drove to a friend’s house who took him to Nu Shifa Hospital, in Sydenham, after he complained of body pains.

His medical records show he had suffered injuries to his right shoulder.

He had small cuts and bruises behind his ear and head.

After recovering from his injuries in hospital, Harrysingh returned home on Sunday and opened a case on Monday at the Greenwood Park police station.

He submitted details of the bakkie to the police and hoped the driver would be arrested.

His mother, Subashini Harrysingh, said her son must now wear a brace on his shoulder.

“His shoulder was dislocated and he has ligament and tissue damage. He will return to hospital in two weeks for a check-up,” she said.

Police confirmed a case of assault had been opened.
