‘I never saw any body parts’

Mokopane - A Limpopo man, accused of killing an unknown woman for her body parts, vehemently denied that he participated in the body parts merchants transaction, the Mokerong Magistrate’s Court heard on Wednesday.

Edward Raatji, 50, said he does not know why he was arrested and how a human head and genitals were found in his car.

During his bail application on Wednesday, Raatji told court that he wants the court to release him on bail so that he could take care of his children and finish his studies.

He also bargained with his ill-health and presented a historic sickness which included chronic health as compelling key reasons he wanted to be released on bail.

He is accused of a murder, possession of human body parts and contravention of corpses Act.

Raatji gave a detail account of sickness he is suffering from and also claim that despite his condition police denied him food for two days.

He was arrested on July 10, with Stanley Mohlake who abandoned his bail application last week.

They were caught selling body parts at taxi rank after police followed them upon receiving a tip-off on unusual transaction at a market place.

The National Prosecution Authority said it could not be accidental that of many cars driving to Polokwane, Raatji’s car was tracked and found with human body parts as indicated on a tip-off.

It was after Raatji denied that he did not see human body parts uncovered during his arrest.

Raatji said: “Up to this day I don’t know what they find when they searched.”

Raatji asked that he be released on R500 bail.

He said if he could be released will reside at University of Venda campus were he is doing second year for LLB degree.

The hearing was postponed to August 4, for State to call more witness.
