Durban - The Inkatha Freedom Party on Tuesday called for strong action to be taken against those caught damaging state and private property.

The party’s national chairman Blessed Gwala said: “Although this is an internal ANC matter we cannot allow a situation where people will be seen burning state and private property and then claiming that they are doing it to vent their frustrations about internal party matters.”

He said irrespective of their grievances people needed to abide by the law. He urged ANC members to take up their issues directly with the party.

“The ANC must be blamed for this chaos. The ANC should have stepped in to stop this violence that is costing our country dearly in terms of financial losses domestically and abroad. The ANC could have made sure that they responded to the people if they raised concerns in the beginning but they failed to do that, and that is why we ended up having people destroying property and endangering lives of citizens,” he said.

He demanded that the ANC meet with its disaffected members in a bid to halt the ongoing violence that has ravaged Pretoria.

“We demand that the ANC must call an urgent meeting with the affected people to stop this chaos. Many people have been affected by this protest even those who are not part of the disgruntled ANC membership,” he said.
