Johannesburg - The Inkatha Freedom Party on Sunday said one of its councillors was shot dead at the Mogale City Hostel on Johannesburg's West Rand.

“The IFP is saddened by the death of its councillor, Mr Patrick Ngubane, who was gunned down last night,” national organiser Alco Ngobese said in a statement.

“We pass our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. We will miss him for his great service to the party as well the people whom he served.”

Ngubane, 44, was shot at the Mogale City Hostel on Saturday.

Ngobese said according to witnesses, Ngubane attempted to calm a crowd that were fighting and was shot.

“We call on the police to urgently investigate and to ensure that justice is served,” said Ngobese.

“Cllr Ngubane, who was (one of) the IFP's representatives in the Mogale City Municipality, served the IFP and the people of Mogale City with great distinction.

Gauteng police have confirmed that they are investigating the shooting.

“We do not have a lot of details but understand there was a party and a scuffle occurred and a man was shot,” Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said.

“No one has been arrested and investigations continue.” - Sapa
