KwaZulu-Natal - The IFP has welcomed the conviction of three men for killing one of the party's councillors in Gingindlovu in 2009.
“This must be a strong warning to others who are contemplating killing (Inkatha Freedom Party) IFP councillors,” spokesman Velaphi Ndlovu said in a statement.
On Friday, the Mtunzini High Court found Bongumusa Ngema, 27, Douglas Ngcobo, 36, and Sanadu Phiri, 22, guilty of killing Mfanafuthi Elliot Maphumulo.
The men were sentenced to life imprisonment. Ndlovu asked police to act quickly to arrest those linked to political killings.
“The IFP feels that it takes far too long for the police to arrest the perpetrators of political murders, despite being obliged to act in an unbiased manner.”
On February 25, 2009, Maphumulo, 50, was attacked and shot four times. Police later found his body in bushes near his house in the Mananda Reserve. - Sapa
