Johannesburg - A man accused of operating an illegal gambling business has been granted bail by the Zeerust Magistrate's Court, North West police said on Saturday.

Savvas Panagiotou, 32, was granted bail of R10 000 on Friday, and would appear in court again on February 6, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

Panagiotou was arrested the previous day at his business premises in Zeerust, as it was believed he did not hold the relevant license from the North West Gambling Board to operate his business.

“Fifty-two gambling machines, gambling tokens to the value of R16 000, and cash to the value of R3 400 were seized during the operation,” Ngubane said.

Under the conditions attached to Panagiotou's bail, he had to hand in his passport and was required to contact the investigating officer in the case if he left the Groot Marico district court jurisdiction. - Sapa
