Polokwane - An immigration officer appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on a charge of corruption, the Hawks said.

“He was granted bail of R1000 and the case was postponed to July 25 for final investigations,” said Captain Paul Ramaloko.

Edmond Lekgothoane, 37, was arrested on Friday for allegedly soliciting a R7000 bribe from a Bangladeshi businessman.

“Allegations are that the immigration officer confronted the businessman and told him his asylum had expired, and then he solicited the bribe,” Ramaloko said.

The asylum had not expired and the man notified the police. The Hawks arrested the officer as the money was handed over. - Sapa
