A Bothasig man appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with the shooting death of his brother-in-law.
Magistrate Kathy Page granted Aubrey Bowers R1 000 bail. He is expected to appear in court again on September 28.
Bowers faces a charge of murder.
It is alleged that he shot and killed his brother-in-law Mark Wolmarans on Saturday evening. The two married twin sisters, Fiona and Millicent, often played golf together and were good friends.
On Saturday, they and two of their friends had arrived back from Citrusdal where they had played golf.
Bowers took out his gun, showed it to his friends and told them he wanted to take them to a shooting range. Seconds later a shot rang out.
The bullet hit Wolmarans in the head and he collapsed.
One of the friends ran to the police station and Bowers and the other friend waited for the paramedics.
Wolmarans was declared dead on the scene and Bowers was arrested, charged with murder and held at the Parow police station.
Wolmarans and his wife owned a management consultancy company and Bowers owns a successful upholstery business.
Family spokesman Rod Solomons said yesterday the two families were going for counselling. Funeral arrangements have not been finalised.
“It is devastating, the families are very traumatised, it was a tragic accident,” he said.
Solomons was meant to go with them to Citrusdal. He said they belonged to a social golf club and played together often. Wolmarans and Solomons had studied together and had been friends for 30 years. - Cape Argus
