Johannesburg - A magistrate's court has ordered a judicial inquest into the death of Anika Smit, the 17-year-old Pretoria schoolgirl whose hands were cut off in her 2010 murder, Beeld newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Magistrate Pierre Wessels ordered the inquest in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court.

This meant that the court would hear evidence before Wessels decided if there was a prima facie case against anyone.

The State will subpoena her father Johan Smit, and her former boyfriend Nico Venter to testify.

The Grade 11 pupil at Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz in Pretoria had been raped, her throat was slit, and her hands were cut off. Smit had not gone to school that day because of an ear infection.

At the time, her boyfriend was accused of killing her at her father's home in Theresa Park in Pretoria North in March 2010.

But charges against him were later withdrawn.

Her father told Beeld newspaper the investigation into her murder had come to a standstill after investigating officer Captain Mike van Aardt was transferred to the Oscar Pistorius case last year.
