Cape Town - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is to investigate the shooting at Cape Town International Airport, Ipid said on Thursday.

A police constable shot and wounded three people before turning the gun on himself on Wednesday evening.

Cape Town police on Wednesday had the officer's age as 33 while Ipid said the officer was 44 years old.

“The allegations are that a 44-year-old police constable from Lentegeur SAPS (Vispol) shot and wounded his partner and two other patrons at the Ocean Basket restaurant inside the airport building,” Moses Dlamini said in a statement.

“The officer then shot himself in the head. He was certified dead at the scene.”

Dlamini said the shooting was apparently triggered by an argument between the constable and his partner.

The woman was shot in the chest while the other two victims were wounded in the buttocks and leg respectively.

“Ipid was notified and attended the scene. A preliminary investigation is under way to establish the circumstances of the incident,” he said.
