Kimberley – Another young girl from Phuthanang in Kimberley has disappeared without a trace. Her mother, Agnes Moyo, has been left with several unanswered questions after her 17-year-old daughter, Anna, went missing 20 days ago.

In July last year, five-year-old Keitumetse Magwadibane, also from Phuthanang, also went missing. She has still not been found.

According to Agnes, her daughter was last seen accompanying a woman, whom she had employed about two months, to a tuckshop.

“I sell fruit and vegetables in the community and this woman approached me, asking for a job. I employed her in November last year and she sold fruit and vegetables for me at various social grant pay-points,” she said.

She added that her daughter and the woman apparently went to collect outstanding debt from customers on the day of her disappearance, January 4.

“I was not at home when the two of them left. Some of my customers said they saw Anna with the woman and they went to the tuckshop. My other two children also said that Anna had left with the woman.”

Moyo said that she confronted the woman after her daughter did not return home.

“I went to the woman’s house in Promised Land and asked her about my child. She could not provide me with any answers. I also called Anna’s phone several times but it was off. I then went to the Kagisho police station and they told me to wait because Anna may have ran off with a boyfriend or decided not to come back home. The police said they will come to me, but I must first wait see whether she comes back,” she said.

“My husband and I then went around asking the community whether anyone has see our daughter. Some indicated that they saw her on the day (January 4) but not afterwards. Some community members helped us in searching for her but we could not find her.”

According to Moyo, the police only arrived about two weeks after her daughter’s disappearance.

“The police officer accompanied us to the house of the woman who worked for me and the police took her in for questioning. At first she claimed that she left Anna with a relative and we went to the house of the relative. However, the people at the house said that they had not seen Anna since before Christmas,” she said.

“The police then took the woman back to the police station and she changed her statement, claiming that she last saw Anna with another man, who stays in the area, at a local tuckshop.

“We went to this man but he said that he told the woman to take Anna back home. The tuckshop owner also confirmed that Anna was at the shop to buy airtime and that she was with the woman,” Moyo said.

She added that the woman was then released by the police.

“It is not in my daughter’s nature to run away. She used to help me in my business and her teachers were shocked and worried to hear that she is missing. Her friends also indicated that they had not seen or heard from her and that she does not have a boyfriend.”

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Majang Skalkie said they are investigating the matter.

“The police in Kagisho have opened a missing child’s report following the disappearance of Anna Moyo. She was reported as missing on Thursday, January 5 2017, by her mother.

“It appears as if she was last seen on January 4 in Phuthanang. During the time of her disappearance she was wearing an ANC-branded t-shirt, a yellow and green striped skirt and Nike sneakers."

“Anyone with information regarding Anna’s whereabouts can contact Sergeant Tiny Segami on 082 736 8908,” said Skalkie.
