Durban - A 27 year old man has been convicted and sentenced to ten years imprisonment by the Durban Regional Court for raping his 16-year-old sister-in-law.

Provincial police said in a statement on Monday: “”On 21 July 2013 the 16-year-old girl was at her place of residence in St Georges Street in Durban when she was approached by the accused, who overpowered her and raped her. The victim managed to escape and seek assistance from neighbours who assisted her to report the matter to the police.”

The accused was immediately arrested and a case was opened at the Durban Central Police Station, and the docket was transferred to the Durban Central Violence, Child protection and Sexual offences unit where further investigations were done which eventually led to the man being convicted and sentenced.

“This conviction is a victory for the SAPS members who are defending our women and children on a daily basis. We hope that this victory will serve as a warning to other cowards who intend to exploit those that are vulnerable in the society,” Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said.
