Johannesburg - Three men were each sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment by the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on Friday for shooting dead a police officer, Johannesburg Metro Police said.

The men, aged in their late 20s and early 30s, were arrested after they shot and killed metro police officer Gabri Fouche, 25, on October 3, 2012, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

The group robbed a post office in Florida, west of Johannesburg, and while fleeing the scene, their vehicle collided with Fouche's motorcycle.

A shoot-out then occurred between Fouche and the men.

He was shot in the chest and was confirmed dead at the scene, while one of the men was shot and wounded and was arrested.

The other two men fled the scene but were arrested.
