Johannesburg - Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) on Wednesday condemned the killing of two police officers during a recent shootout in Johannesburg.

“We join the greater South African community in condemning the barbaric attacks against our members. Deliberate attacks against police officers contravene the country’s law and constitute a crime against humanity,” said POPCRU general secretary Nkosinathi Theledi.

Constable M.R Myeza and constable Maisha Mafokoane of the Sandringham police station were killed during a shootout between officers and suspects on the N3 highway near the Modderfontein off-ramp in Johannesburg on Sunday.

They were pursuing a suspicious looking vehicle when the car’s occupants opened fire on the officers.

Constable Steven Mafanelo, from the same station, was critically wounded.

“We cannot rest and fold our arms when police are maimed and killed by criminals while executing their duties. We stand firm with our government by unequivocally condemning all these attacks against the police,” said Theledi.

POPCRU extended its condolences to the families of the two officers and wished Mafanelo a speedy recovery.
