Joburg cops arrest 85 people

Johannesburg -

Eighty-five people were arrested for different crimes in Johannesburg, police said on Saturday.

Thirty were arrested on drug related offences and 55 for other crimes including murder, robbery, hijacking, theft, rape, assault and drunk driving on Friday, said Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini.

Roadblocks were manned in Honeydew, Roodepoort, Kagiso, Krugerdorp and other parts of Soweto.

Drugs, stolen copper cables, counterfeit DVDs and a firearm were recovered.

Three stolen vehicles were also confiscated in Orlando, Soweto when police raided a panel-beaters premises.

Dlamini said one of the vehicles was found to have been involved in a hit and run case in Booysens.

“The owner of the vehicle will be arrested soon,” he said.

Five premises selling liquor without valid licences were also closed.

In other areas of Gauteng, police recovered four unlicensed firearms including three 9mm pistols and a revolver.

Four people were arrested in Primrose, Loate and Dunnoter. - Sapa
