Johannesburg – A man was left critically injured after he was shot by unknown gunmen while riding a bicycle on the R101 in Brakfontein, Johannesburg.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said when paramedics arrived on the scene, they found the man lying on the side of the road surrounded by members of the community.

"Paramedics immediately assessed the man and found that he had sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen and was in a critical condition."

According to Meiring, the man was immediately treated for his injuries and rushed to the nearby hospital for urgent medical care.

It was understood that the man had been cycling down the road when he was approached by an unknown number of armed men and a struggle ensued and the man was shot.

The man's bicycle was stolen during the incident. "Local authorities will conduct an investigation into the matter," Meiring said.
