Johannesburg - Two train coaches were torched at the Croesus railway station in Johannesburg, Metrorail said on Wednesday.
The coaches, a motor coach and a plain coach, were part of a train en route to Braamfontein on Tuesday evening, spokesman Lawrence Venkile said.
“No injuries were reported in this incident, but preliminary investigations suggest that arson may have been the root cause.”
On Tuesday afternoon three carriages were destroyed at the Woodstock railway station in Cape Town. Four commuters were injured and taken to Groote Schuur Hospital.
Metrorail said both fires were believed to be arson.
Metrorail CEO Mosenngwa Mofi said the company would enlist the help of all law enforcement agencies to bring an end to the destruction of its assets.
It would also lobby prosecuting authorities to charge those involved with wilful destruction of public property, economic sabotage, and attempted murder.
