Musician Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye was allowed out of prison to attend his grandmother's funeral in Soweto, City Press reported on Sunday.
This was after he won an urgent court order on Friday, the newspaper reported.
Maarohanye was forced to go to court after the department of correctional services denied his request for compassionate leave.
He was escorted to the Avalon cemetery on Saturday in leg irons by correctional services personnel.
Lukas Muntingh, project co-ordinators for the Civil Society Prison Reform initiative told the newspaper legislation “does allow for prisoners to attend significant events such as funerals, which are determined on a case-to-case basis”.
Maarohanye's bid to appeal his murder conviction and sentence was denied in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
Maarohanye and his co-accused Themba Tshabalala were found guilty on October 16 last year.
They were drag racing in Protea North on March 8, 2010, when they crashed into a group of schoolboys.
Prince Mohube, Mlungisi Cwayi, Andile Mthombeni, and Phomello Masemola were killed. Frank Mlambo and Fumani Mushwana were left permanently brain damaged. - Sapa
