JOHANNESBURG April 7 Sapa

MPUMA SERIAL RAPIST JAILED

A 35-year-old man convicted for rape and murder was jailed for life by the Secunda Regional Court on Monday, Mpumalanga police said.

Bheki Khumalo was given 22 life sentences and 245 years in prison, said Colonel Leonard Hlathi.

He said the man was charged with 21 counts of rape, 17

kidnappings, five robberies with aggravating circumstances, and murder.

"His criminal activities spiralled from 2003 up until 2010."

The court heard he had promised women jobs under false pretences.

"Khumalo found some of the victims with their boyfriends in the bushes. He would bang the driver's window and violently shout accusations of trespassing."

He also targeted women who were fetching woods in the bush.

"His victims that the State knows about were aged between 12 and 60."

Mpumalanga police commissioner Lt-Gen Thulani Ntobela said other potential criminals should learn from Khumalo that crime does not pay.

"We welcome the sentence which will serve as the last chapter for Khumalo."
