Cape Town - Shrien Dewani will be formally charged with the murder of his wife Anni when he lands in Cape Town, a justice department official said on Monday.

National spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga said indications from the National Prosecuting Authority were that charges of conspiracy to commit murder and defeating the ends of justice still stood.

He said Dewani's flight would take off from England on Monday night and would land in Cape Town on Tuesday morning.

He would be taken directly to the high court at 11.30am and charged.

Mhaga was addressing journalists at the Western Cape High Court on the technical aspects of Dewani's first appearance.

“To this end, it's all systems go and preparations for his arrival are still underway,” Mhaga said.

Provincial justice department head Hishaam Mohamed said Dewani would not be taken to a police station first for processing, as was usually the case.

Courtroom four was packed, with around 60 local and foreign journalists, photographers and videographers.
