Cape Town - Government has welcomed the double-life sentence imposed on Johannes Kana by the Swellendam Circuit Court on Friday for the murder and rape of Anene Booysen.
Acting government spokeswoman and GCIS CEO Phumla Williams commended the law enforcement agencies and the justice system for the rapid delivery of justice.
Government would take a steadfast approach to crimes of such a brutal nature.
“This sentencing demonstrates that government will not tolerate vile criminal acts and will remain committed to ensuring that all South Africans feel and are safe,” she said.
The sentence put the focus on gender and child-based violence. Williams called on all South Africans to reflect on the impact of gender-based violence and to jointly take responsibility and action to protect children.
The Democratic Alliance also welcomed the sentence.
“Kana deserves nothing less, given the brutal and senseless crimes he committed,” DA spokeswoman Helen Lamoela said.
Booysen was raped and disembowelled and died in Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, on the afternoon of Saturday, February 2.
Kana was found guilty earlier this week.
