Swellendam - Johannes Kana has been convicted of the rape and murder of Bredasdorp teenager Anene Booysen.

Judge Patricia Goliath handed down judgment in the Swellendam Circuit Court on Tuesday.

Kana, who pleaded guilty to raping Anene but not guilty to killing her, was the last person seen with Anene outside a Bredasdorp pub in the early hours of February 2.

On Monday, Pieter du Toit, for Kana, told the court that his client admitted in his confession that he had raped and assaulted Anene, but denies responsibility for the injuries to her lower body which led to her death.

Maria Marshall, for the State, told the court the State believed that Kana had raped Anene and caused her death by inserting his hand or an object into her vagina and anus and pulling out her intestines.

Anene was found raped and disembowelled at a construction site not far from her home.

On her death bed Anene allegedly said five to six men had attacked her.

Sentencing will take place on Wednesday. - IOL
