Durban - A Kenyan man has been sentenced to life in prison by the Scottburgh Regional Court for robbing and killing an 86-year-old man in Park Rynie, KwaZulu-Natal in 2010, police said on Friday.

Ismail Juma, 20, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment (25 years) on Wednesday for Ramsacal Bagrathic's murder and 15 years for aggravated robbery, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

He would spend a total of 40 years in jail. Bagrathic's body was found at his home in School Circle, Park Rynie, in October 2010. He had been suffocated with a pillow and his home had been robbed.

Juma was later arrested in Durban. The case was postponed a number of times.

“I'm relieved that the case has been finalised and am pleased with the conviction and sentence,” investigating officer Yugen Moodley said.
