Khat drug trial postponed

The case of two men charged with possession of the drug plant khat has been postponed by the Beaufort West Magistrate's Court, Western Cape police said on Wednesday.

Captain Bernadine Steyn said Thomas Maeimela, 33, and Johannes Mpofu, 40, appeared on Tuesday and were granted R5000 bail each.

They would appear again on April 17, 2012.

The men were stopped in Beaufort West at 5am on Tuesday, while travelling from Johannesburg to Cape Town.

Steyn said 588 khat bundles were found in the back of the grey Mercedes Benz Sprinter delivery van. The bundles had an estimated street value of R59 000. - Sapa
