Lenasia - Nine Mozambican nationals were arrested on charges of kidnapping at Lenasia extension 10 on Thursday morning, police said.

Their arrests came after a man who they had held captive managed to escape and alerted residents, who called the police, said Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini.

Six women were among those arrested.

A 39-year-old man from Germiston told police he was at a car dealer in De Deur last Thursday when he was approached by two armed men.

He was held at gunpoint, bundled into a vehicle, blindfolded and taken to a house in Lenasia where he was locked inside a garage.

The kidnappers began making demands for a ransom from the man's family shortly afterwards.

His family opened a case of kidnapping at the Germiston police station on Sunday.

The man managed to escape through the roof on Thursday morning and sought help from the neighbours.

Police were alerted and nine people were later arrested at the house where he was being kept.

They were expected to appear in the Lenasia Magistrate's Court soon to face a charge of kidnapping. - Sapa
