Political killings pose a threat to the ANC's stability, KwaZulu-Natal party secretary Sihle Zikalala said on Friday.
“Police should investigate political killings speedily because it creates instability when we lose capable leaders,” he said during a march in Durban.
Eight African National Congress members had been killed recently and 14 people were killed during the 2009 elections, Zikalala said.
Hundreds of ANC supporters marched against political killings, rape, abuse of the elderly, and human trafficking.
“Police should also strengthen intelligence capabilities so that they can detect an incident before it happens, including what happened in Marikana,” he said.
Police should increase visibility in rural areas, informal settlements and townships.
Zikalala called on KwaZulu-Natal premier Zweli Mkhize to hold a social cohesion summit.
“We urge Mkhize to convene a social cohesion summit where stakeholders, including religious leaders, NPOs, security structures and government departments get together to develop a comprehensive plan to deal with social ills.”
Zikalala, eThekwini ANC regional chairman Sibongiseni Dhlomo and mayor James Nxumalo joined the marchers, who wore ANC T-shirts and carried the party's flag.
They displayed placards reading: “ANC is against elderly abuse”, and “ANC is against political assassinations”, and sang songs in support of President Jacob Zuma.
