Johannesburg - A 32-year-old man was arrested at the weekend after the kidnapping and attempted rape of a 15-year-old girl.

The girl was walking along the corner of Harrison and Von Brandis streets in the CBD to buy food at about 8.30pm on Saturday, when the man stopped her and pulled out a knife, threatening her.

“He pulled her to a scrapyard area and while undressing her, he was disturbed by a knock on the scrapyard door,” Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said on Sunday.

The young girl made a run for it, while the man was attending to the knock on the door.

“The man chased the girl outside the yard and onto the street. She screamed for help and community members came to her rescue,” Mbele added.

The angry mob beat the man up before police arrived on the scene and arrested him.

He has been charged with attempted rape and kidnapping.

“The girl is receiving counselling... at the station we referred her to. She didn’t sustain any injuries,” Mbele said.

The man would appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
