People were slowly filing into the Modimolle Magistrate's Court on Friday morning ahead of the bail application of three men charged alongside Johan Kotze for the attack on his estranged wife.

Women dressed in pink T-shirts occupied the front row and displayed posters calling for the three, Mmapuru Peter Mohlako, Andries Paparona Sithole and Sello Frans Mphaka, to be denied bail.

They were joined by ANC Women's League members, who made up a sizeable part of the crowd in the public gallery.

“Jail, no bail for monsters,” read one placard.

Forty-four-year old Jerry Nko held a placard reading: “Life sentence is a solution”. However, he left when he heard that Kotze would not be appearing.

“It is not him, it's those boys from Makapanstad,” he said before handing his placard to another man and leaving the courtroom.

The men are charged with gang-raping Kotze's wife and mutilating her body with objects including nails, a screwdriver and a grinder, while allegedly Kotze held them at gunpoint on January 3.

They had been hired to work in the garden of Kotze's rented home in Modimolle, when he allegedly forced them to attack his wife. Kotze also allegedly killed his stepson after luring him to the house. - Sapa
