Johannesburg - An alleged Krejcir-linked hit man was a flight risk as he was found with two hacksaws and five cellphones in his cell, the police said in court on Monday.

Owen Serero was among four suspects arrested in January for allegedly conspiring to kill forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan and Colonel Nkosana “Killer” Ximba, who have investigated Czech-fugitive Radovan Krejcir.

Serero is also facing separate charges at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, including three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances; two charges of illegal possession of a firearm; two charges of illegal possession of ammunition; three counts of theft of a motor vehicle; one of reckless driving; and one count of escaping lawful custody.

Investigator Sifiso Xulu took the stand today to testify in support of the State’s application to have Serero moved from Joburg Central Prison to the cells of Pretoria Central police station.Serero’s lawyer Tshega Ntake questioned how Xulu could be sure the saws and phones belonged to the alleged gun for hire when prison cells were packed full of people.

Xulu said he could not answer on behalf of the prison officials.

State prosecutor Penny Pillay said the State also wanted Serero in the Pretoria cells so they could ensure he would appear before court.

Serero was a no-show in court last Monday as the State said he failed to identify himself to officers at Joburg Central Prison.

Pillay applied for a postponement to allow the police time to conduct an identity parade on March 26 and for blood tests to be performed.

The case was postponed until March 31 for further investigation.
